Prof.G.R.Damodaran started kalaikathir magazine in the year 1948. As part of his science & technology mission. Prof.G.R.Damodaran realized that setting up a modern printing press would serve the twin needs of printing kalaikathir magazine and catering to the needs of the vast clientele in coimbatore for a faster, large volume and quality printing. The kalaikathir achchagam was started in the middle of 1954. Kalaikathir achchagam with plethora of German Heidelberg, Japanese Yoda cylinder, British klockner and the Jobber cylinder machines were installed in the press. In 1981 Photo Typesetting equipment was imported from USA. Heidelberg kors offset machine imported under stringent licensing conditions in 1983. In 1985, the current Dest Top Publishing technology was introduced and a number of indigenous Hmt make Double Demy offset printing machines were acquired progressively including the Hmt 4 colour machine in the year 2003. Kalaikathir has set the trend in printing and has given rise to many offset and letter presses in and around coimbatore with managers and technocrats trained by it at various stages.
